(330.2 x 271.8 x 313 cm) Courtesy the artist and Pierogi Gallery Photography by William Lamson Solarium functions as both an isolated hillside sanctuary and, as Lamson has put it, an "experimental greenhouse." Caramelized sugar is baked into the windows of Solarium, tinting each a unique amber shade. All plants create sugars through photosynthesis; those inside Solarium use light that has been filtered through sugars, a circular process. Weather permitting, Solarium is designed to be viewed from afar, where it appears as a jewel-like object, and from within, for the experience of its unusual plays of light.

  • Jazz Vespers @ 5 pm Dec. 20th.

    December 20, 2015
    NY

Location: 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street New York, NY 10022

Join me with Fran McKendree, as we are hosted by Ike Sturm and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in NYC. We’ll bring our new new cd Sending You Light into this fifty year-old service and jam our prayers with some great players. Christmas may also break out. Ya nevuh no.

    What to expect

Traditionally this liturgy is called Jazz Vespers, though from time to time communion is shared during a Jazz Mass. Whether it is Vespers or a Mass, there is time to light candles, to celebrate the glorious light of Christ in the midst of an otherwise dim world, to receive and offer prayers for healing and peace. A meaningful sermon is always preached and a great band always plays and leads the assembly in song. Everyone is invited to sing. Sometimes there is dancing.

  • The Sacred Art of Chant Not-So-Quiet Day

    February 15, 2016
    CA

9:30 am – Registration, coffee and tea
10-3 pm – workshop, with a break for lunch
$25 each (no one will be turned away for lack of funds)

Join us at Church Divinity School of the Pacific as we reflect at length on the nature of sound as prayer (in the beginning was the sound) and discern new ways to open our hearts. We will create a sound community in which we will investigate the ways sacred sound nurtures our spirit; learn sound spiritual exercises and mantras to enhance our well-being in a unique way; and experience God with and in our voices. There will be periods of deep listening and silence (being still and knowing that God is God and we are not), walking meditation, writing, and lots of singing. We will learn how sound enhances mental and physical well-being through working (and playing!) with our bodies’ energy centers, the chakras; and learn simple and powerful sound prayers and mantras from many traditions to incorporate into our prayer lives. If you think it’s time to be intentional about growing in compassion and love, you’re in the right place! If you pray with a portable instrument, please bring it. Please come and go as you need.

  • Sound as Prayer @ Grace Episcopal Church

    NJ

A Not-So-Quiet Day of Spiritual Exercises Using Sound and Shared Silence.
Join us for a day of depth, spirit, and transformation.

Time: 9:00 -3:00 pm, with a break for lunch.
Cost $10 each (partially funded by a Lilly Grant). No one turned away, but please register so we can get an accurate lunch count.

    Description:
Sound as Prayer: A Not-So-Quiet Day of Spiritual Exercises Using Sound and Shared Silence

The voice is nature’s most perfect instrument; other instruments have been trying to replicate its magnetism since the dawn of time. Our voices reveal things about us before we realize them ourselves. The voice is a barometer: it measures the atmospheric pressure of our emotions. Voices can betray energy level – picture a child before bed, hoarsely crying, “I’m NOT tired!” Our voices disclose attitude: honest or dishonest, sincere or insincere – how often are the words “Oh, I’d love to, but …” belied by the feeling in the voice (“No way in hell!”). When we dream about our greatest dreams or suffer our biggest hurts, they are present in our voices. The voice you’ve been given is a part of your gift to the world and is unique in the universe. Knowing yourself can put you on the fast track to a healthy inner life.

In this popular workshop we will re-discover God with and in our voices; listen deeply and experience the ways sound touches spirit; explore sacred chant to heal ourselves and the world, learning how sound can enhance well-being; reflect on sounds that open (and close) our hearts. All are welcome at this day of humming, toning, singing, deep listening, and seriously fun prayer. If you can hum, you can come. Learn how your voice lives in your body, how to use it to generate health and healing, and how to let it help you bring your best self to all you do. Listen to yourself for a change.

We’ll share ideas and best practices, explore new forms of worship, and listen for what the Holy Spirit is saying as we pray our way into a more just and generous expression of the Christian faith. Keynote addresses, musical resources for your congregation, workshops (one by me!) opportunities for songwriters and composers to share and create new music and liturgy together. The emphasis is on encouraging and equipping local congregations to create new music, art, and liturgy in their contexts.

Open Spaces. Freshly Baked Bread. Lots of Music. Chocolate and Coloring Books.

I’ll be joining the fine people of Not-So-Churchy on Monday March 13th at 130 w. 30th street, NYC (between 6th and 7th). Come!

Who are these Not-So-Churchy people, you may ask:

Not So Churchy is an intimate worshipping community that creates our own services month by month, outside the structures of the traditional church.

We are artists, community activists, and musicians. We are adults and kids — kids are an integral part of our community and we know them as full participants.

We are lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and straight allies. We bring all of ourselves, the stuff we like and the stuff we aren’t so sure of, to our space together.

    • There is always laughter
    • You might feel calmer leaving than you did coming in
    • Each gathering is a little bit different, created with care

There is space for change, room to grow, and an experience that’s Not So Churchy.

  • THE SACRED ART OF CHANT: CONTEMPORARY PRACTICE, TIMELESS PRAYER

    March 17-18, 2017
    CT
Please join me at the beautiful Mercy by the Sea Retreat & Conference Center, on the CT shore of the LI Sound.

“Chanting with an intention to open our hearts and minds to the presence of God in us helps us
to be quiet in the face of mystery and learn how to hear what it has to say to us.”
-Ana Hernandez, from The Sacred Art of Chant: Preparing to Practice

During this retreat, experience the sacred nature of sound and the contemplative practice of chant with musician, author and retreat leader, Ana Hernandez. Both in community and during individual time, participants will:

    • Explore the ways sacred sound nurtures our spirit
    • Learn sound spiritual exercises, chants and mantras from many traditions
    • Experience the Sacred with and in our voices.

The purpose of our time together will be both to reflect at length on the nature of sound as prayer (In the beginning was the sound) and to discern new ways to open our hearts. We will create a sound community in which we will investigate the ways sacred sound nurtures our spirit; learn sound spiritual exercises and mantras to enhance our well-being in a unique way; and experience God with and in our voices.

There will be periods of deep listening and silence (being still and knowing that God is God and we are not), walking meditation, singing, and free time to enjoy the bracing weather on the water. If you think it’s time to be intentional about growing in compassion and love, you’re in the right place!

No experience with singing or formal music instruction is required
. Based on her years working with individuals, choirs, retreat groups and church communities around the country, Ana believes that anyone can chant. “It doesn’t matter” she says, “if people have told you all your life that you can’t sing.” The invitations are to trust the desire, move with the hope and enjoy the opportunity to explore in a safe, joyful community of like-spirited seekers.

The chants and mantras will range from traditional scripture passages to the poetry of Sufi poet Rumi to lyrical celebrations of the Divine in the natural world. What will be learned in community, can also be engaged with in private prayer and meditation. The retreat will also offer time for deep listening and silence, walking meditation and simple enjoyment of the beauty of the natural world as it begins to transition from winter to early spring.

    Friday, March 17, 2017, 5:30 p.m. to Saturday March 18, 2017, 4 p.m.; optional extended retreat to Sunday, March 19, 2017, 10 a.m.

    Optional Saturday Lenten Evening Prayer
While the retreat ends at 4 p.m. on Saturday, there is an option for both commuters and overnight retreatants to stay for dinner and evening prayer on Saturday with Ana; guests may also stay the evening, and end their retreat after breakfast on Sunday.

Fees:  Single occupancy, $250; double occupancy, $170 /person
(Includes program and overnight accommodations with private bath and all meals from dinner Friday evening through lunch on Saturday.)

With option for extended overnight retreat ending Sunday, 10 a.m., the total single occupancy fee is $365; double occupancy, $225/person (includes program, overnight accommodations with private bath, and all meals through Sunday breakfast.)

April 12th, 7 PM – Now in our 14th year!

Latin for darkness, or shadows, Tenebrae is an ancient service of Western Christianity, traditionally done during Holy Week. Based on the Psalter, sung in Gregorian Chant by a nine voice men’s choir, infused with musical improvisations by Ruth Cunningham, Ana Hernandez (HARC), and organist David Christopher, Tenebrae is a deeply moving spiritual experience, and this Tenebre is unlike any other. HeartSong: Building Communities of Practice

Whether you’re in a small church with limited resources, or in a larger place looking for a way to help your community find and/or build its collective voice, learn to play together, say yes to the Spirit, and be transformed, HeartSong is the workshop that will enable you to deepen your community of practice, through the shared creation of sound and silence. CA

From Cameron at St. Aidan’s in Noe Valley: In an era when more and more of us are moved to go out into the world to stand with the oppressed as agents of change, this is an evening to steep ourselves in the spiritual grounding that sustains us amid struggle. We will gather to create signs, to learn and compose chants that flow out of the spirituality that nourishes us and generates our action. Come gather for worship, simple supper, sign-making and chant-creation. Bring a favorite verse of scripture, poetry, or other prose to work with. Come create and be nourished in community. Worship: 6pm Supper: 6:30 Sign and Chant Workshop: 7-8:15

Today’s brilliant text idea came to Cameron Partridge via Adrienne Rich:

A wild patience has take me this far.

    December 24-25, 2017
    NY

I like nothing better than singing in a choir! The folks at CHR have been supportive of my work for years, an I love visiting whenever they need an alto, because it feels like home! Also because, last year, I was greeted by Pierre the Llama, a hug from Tuesday, and a LET GO mug from Mollie. It’s the only place I’ve ever sung where choir practice ceases when the animals arrive so we can go see them! Priorites straight? YES!

  • WomanKind!

    February 23-24, 2018
    VA

Every other year, St. James’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia hosts WomanKind, a two-day symposium on women’s spirituality with dynamic speakers, engaging workshops, and creative worship centered on a particular theme.

This year Sara Miles, Neichelle Guidry, and Emily Scott will dive into this theme:‘Lift Up Your Hearts: The Transformative Power of Word and Table’. As we watch the frightening pronouncements made daily to marginalize and dehumanize women, people of color, immigrants, refugees and more, we want to focus the power of  God’s Word and Sacraments to gather people together, uplift them, and even transform them.

I’ll facilitate a workshop and participate in worship. So excited!

  • Divine Exchange Wisdom School with Cynthia Bourgeault

    March 11-16, 2018
    NC

Got an email inviting me to this teaching at Kanuga on March 11-16th. I’ve got a soft spot for wisdom, so, of course I said yes! Then I found out it was Part B. Hm. What happened to Part A? Am I walking into a group with a history? Then I found out that they’ve recruited a critical mass of young adults and POC. Bonus! Maybe there’ll be another skeptic! Then I found out there was lots of reading. I like reading a lot. I ordered four books. Turns out, I’ve read enough on the subject(s) so I returned three of them. I know nothing more, except I’m to bring my guitar and a shruti box, and that Kanuga is a beautiful place.

Sometimes surprises are mystifying. Maybe I’m supposed to be able to intuit something? Dunno. A couple of stories have floated by in my mind, but they’re just stories. So, here I am, partly excited, partly wondering what I’m getting into, and still, hm. I’ll find out soon enough.

  • Adelynrood!

    August 3-11, 2018

This weekend I’m the chapel musician and I’ll sit in on the sessions with Becca Stevens from Thistle Farms as she presents

“Love is The Most Powerful Force for Change in the World”

According to author Becca Stevens, her life’s work as a priest and as founder of Thistle Farms (a community of women healing from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction) has been to learn how Love Heals (published 2017). She says “I have learned the lines that divide us are so small and what we hold in common is so much more powerful. Community holds the key to healing. In today’s world we are all busy with the tasks of our everyday lives and leave little room for community engagement and transformation. But this is where we need to focus for healing, for ourselves, and our world. Let us get busy surrendering to our faith; let us get busy loving one another, and serving each other, and forgiving each other, and learning how to walk in faith.” At this retreat you will hear stories of hope from survivors and learn how you can incorporate daily practices of healing into your own life.

There will be singing! We begin at 7:30 pm August 3rd and go through Noon on Sunday August 5th.
If you can’t come, click on the link above and get shopping for products that heal!

  • HeartSong Workshop in Baton Rouge!

    October 13-14, 2018
    LA

Join us at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge, LA for a weekend of great singing, deep prayer, and lots of fun!

    HeartSong: Building Communities of Practice

Whether your church is small or large, HeartSong is a workshop to help you deepen your relationships, find/build your collective voice,  and enable you to enter the flow of the larger community, HeartSong is the workshop that will enable you to learn to play together and be transformed. Say yes to the Spirit and deepen your community of practice, through the shared creation of sound and silence. We will listen to and notice the spirit within, reclaim the joy of group learning by rote, utilize repetition, and engage our oft ignored ability to harmonize on the spot.

With simple chants and global songs, we’ll move from the meditation cushion to the streets for a day of transformation and deep fun. Sing your way to your sweetest identity, individually and collectively, each person open to sharing more of who they are becoming, and confident that the spiritual work they do to become their best selves will be honored and be integrated into the larger community. There will be singing, drumming, movement, and group improvisation (Yes You Can!), – all of which will leave your community with more tools to invite, encourage, and include absolutely everyone.

  • Edna Mahan Maximum Security Women’s Prison

It’s time to go to jail and sing with the women again!  The women sing like angels! I’ll need to get there at the crack of dawn to be able to make it past the guards (last time it took 90 minutes). Jail sucks and it’s demoralizing. Let’s work toward keeping people out of it, and on restoring voting rights after they’ve served their time. Call your elected officials about it!
    Thanks.

    June 28, 2019 - July 2, 2018
    MA

    ForgivnessGarden-Small-537x260

“Let the rain come and wash away the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds held and nurtured over generations. Let the rain wash away the memory of the hurt, the neglect. Then let the sun come out and fill the sky with rainbows. Let the warmth of the sun heal us wherever we are broken. Let it burn away the fog so that we can see each other clearly. So that we can see beyond labels, beyond accents, gender or skin color. Let the warmth and brightness of the sun melt our selfishness. So that we can share the joys and feel the sorrows of our neighbors. And let the light of the sun be so strong that we will see all people as our neighbors. Let the earth, nourished by rain, bring forth flowers to surround us with beauty. And let the mountains teach our hearts to reach upward to heaven. Amen.” – A Prayer for the World – Rabbi Harold Kushner, 2003

I’ll be leading music with the lovely Karen Banta, as we pray liturgies written and collected by Rev. Debbie Royals, Pascua Yaqui from Tucson, AZ and Canon for Native American Ministry in the Diocese of AZ. More amazing speakers include Rev. Canon Sarah Snyder, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Advisor for Reconciliation, Rev. Dr. Alison Boden, Dean of Religious Life and Dean of the Chapel at Princeton University, and Ms. Katrina Brown, producer and Director of the film, “Traces of the Trade,” and founder of the Training Center on Histories and Legacies of Slavery.

    So exciting.

FYI: The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross is an organization of women, founded in 1884 by Emily Malbone Morgan and Vida Dutton Scudder, who may both be found on the Episcopal Calendar “A Great Cloud of Witnesses”

Companions vow to live under a rule of intercessory prayer, thanksgiving, and simplicity of life. Our prayers focus on the needs of individuals and families known to Companions around the world as well as on our concerns for the unity of all God’s people, God’s mission in the world, social justice, and peace and reconciliation.

A diverse group of more than 800 women in 35 chapters, both lay and clergy, single and partnered, the Society welcomes women from any church with whom the Episcopal Church is in communion: the Anglican Communion, the Moravian Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ECLA).

    July 25-26, 2019
    NJ

    SMI-Imagery-2019-Altered-e1558111676390-740x416

I’m honored to be delivering the Keynote Address at this summer’s Drew Theological School Summer Music Institute. There’s certainly enough work for all of us., so if you’re not already involved in Immigration work, please join us for two days of learning, creativity, and song.
    Here’s the blurb:

In the face of rising nationalism, fear of the “other” and race hatred, how does worship speak to the spiritual values that shape meaning in this time? As leaders, demonstrating the central tenet of hospitality in the music we sing, the prayers we pray, and the sermons we preach, we reflect and remember the* Jewish and Christian heritage that guides and transforms our understanding of “welcoming the stranger,” and reminds us that we are all strangers in a strange land.

Use the link above to register and to see the schedule and the amazing people I’m excited to be working with.

Matthew 25:31-40 – for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,  you did it to me.’

    August 23-25, 2019
    TN

I’m taking a whirlwind trip to Nashville to dismantle a little racism and remind the new students and faculty at St. Augustine’s Chapel that everything they’ve been doing in their lives so far has prepared them for amazing things, and they’re READY TO BEGIN AGAIN!

On Friday morning I’ll be at Thistle Farms. There’ll be singing, listening, and learning to navigate our differences as we work toward Dismantling Racism by learning to start at home by managing our internal weather.

Saturday is a free day to play! Old friends and a long walk sound good so far.

On Sunday morning, I’ll be at Vanderbilt University, singing and playing with the chapel musicians. It’s the first Sunday of the fall semester (it won’t be like your mama’s church, unless your mama is like Becca Stevens or me). Becca and I will do a dialogue sermon also (my favorite)!

So looking forward to my time in Nashville!

  • Antiracism from the Inside Out

    August 7-9, 2020
    NH

I’ve been contracted to walk with the good people of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Laconia, NH as they expand their knowledge of how racism operates in our country. Over the course of two weekends we’ll meet on Zoom and do some inquiry around antiracism. They’ve been doing some work around the topic and have been reading lots, but how does racism bind us all and how do we develop resilience as we move through the discomfort inherent in our conversations about white supremacy? How do we allow ourselves to let go of  the internal stories we continue to tell ourselves and the systems that no longer serve us? How do we reclaim and/or deepen our spiritual practices so we can leave behind that feeling of overwhelm so familiar to us all since the spring?
This is a 3-day retreat in August, with a follow up at a later date. Pray for us as we learn how to move forward together.

  • Singing Spirit Interfaith Song Swap

    September 20, 2020

     Thanksgiving Square Image

Do you love to sing with people and learn new songs? Come, sing with us for 90 minutes of pure joy Sunday, September 20th from 2:00-3:30 pm, EDT.  We’ll sing short songs,  chants of faith, doubt, songs to deepen our connection to spirit, ground us to mother earth, walk with one another along the way, as well as movement songs for the street. We’ll lead one another in beauty and fun as we learn to deepen our listening skills and hone our leadership skills. We’ll mostly sing on mute (an invitation to deep practice and possibility), but there are a number of prayers/chants that require us to sing together unmuted!

Ana is a composer, arranger, author, and a song leader with the NYS Poor People’s Campaign and Music That Makes Community. She’s a collector of short songs and chant tunes for all ages, sorts, and conditions. She’s also the author of The Sacred Art of Chant: Preparing to Practice.

  • Who Are We Called To Be?

    November 15, 2020
    NY

Who Are We Called To Be: Infusing Social Justice Themes Into Our Music Ministry
I’ll be co-leading with The Rev. Canon Michael F. Delaney, the Vicar of the Cathedral of the Incarnation and the Canon Liturgist for the Diocese of Long Island.

Many of us find ourselves seeking ways to respond in our music ministry to both the Gospel message and the “moment” in which we find ourselves, a period of extreme social division and upheaval. At this time when it seems judicious to choose the virtual over in-person gatherings, the Board of the Suffolk County American Guild of Organists (SAGO) wanted to provide an opportunity to come together and explore  ways that we can challenge ourselves to incorporate messages of equity and inclusion into our gospel-driven work and worship.

I’ll be facilitating a conversation at Church of the Holy Spirit, Lebanon, NJ among the musicians and clergy to see what they might like their music program to look like when they’re able to come together and sing once more. There will also be talk about the type of music they love, how they want their church community representing in the larger community, and how they would like to sing together going forward. Big work to do! It’s an honor to walk with them.

  • Don’t Be Afraid: Lifting Our Voices to God

    February 4-6, 2022
    CT

Join me for a FREE online retreat on Facebook Live! Sponsored by Trinity Retreat Center, there will be five 30 minute sessions throughout the weekend of February 4-6, 2022. Registration is not required.
This could be a great opportunity to give yourself a break and begin or renew an intentional practice using the voice God gave you.

    Description:
How can we attend to the changing landscape of life as God’s Beloveds? How can we use sound to train our inner landscape and be more present to the lives we find ourselves living? Over the course of five sessions, we’ll learn simple songs, body prayers, and sound exercises to deepen our ability to listen, increase our capacity to hear our way through difficulties, and emerge more grounded in kindness and compassion. Ana’s work aims to bring each of us to that place of possibility that feels like flourishing, even in a pandemic. We’ll practice being present to ourselves and the spirit by listening to what our bodies are telling us.

  • This Week in Denver! HeartSong Workshop

    May 14, 2022

    Singing Spirit Image

HeartSong is the workshop where we practice deep listening to facilitate relationships across lines of difference, find/build our collective voice,  and that enables us to step into the flow of the larger community. We’ll learn exercises to manage our internal weather so that when the crazy of the world surrounds us, we’ll have the tools to stay focused, present, and engaged.

With simple chants and global songs, we’ll move from contemplative practice to a grounded activism, open to spirit, walk in love, leave fear and judgement behind,  and develop a community of practice through the shared creation of sound and silence. We w

ill reclaim the joy of group learning by rote, utilize repetition, and engage our oft ignored ability to harmonize on the spot.

We’ll sing our way to our sweetest identity, individually and collectively, open to sharing more of who we’re becoming, and confident that the spiritual work we do will be honored and  integrated into the larger community. Let’s move forward together, not one step back.

Saturday 10am-2pm – Lunch will be pot luck.

  • Such a Time As This – Kanuga Christian Formation Gathering

    June 13-16, 2022
    NC

I’ll be leading the music for this conference in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina (Cherokee land).

“For if you keep silence at such a time as this, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another quarter, but you and your father’s family will perish. Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for just such a time as this.” (Esther 4:14)

Chosen to set our own interests aside, let go of our own ambitions and face the world today. God knew we were meant to be in this unique time; mind, body and spirit. This is our defining moment – a chance to make a difference. God has great plans for us! Shine your light. Use your voice. Be who God meant us to be. May we be Esthers and be bold and take some risks and love big!

This year we have invited Dr. Westina Matthews and Rev. Callie Swanlund  to be our Retreat Leaders. They will help us “unpack” our feelings and reconnect: mind, body and spirit, with ourselves, our ministries and most importantly, God.

    NY
    320043969_5866304513390677_8960687272326518804_n
On Tuesday, December 20 at 7:00 pm, St. John’s, Kingston, NY will offer a Longest Night Service, both live and online via Facebook Live and Zoom. This is a service of prayer and mindfulness for those dealing with loss of all kinds. We traditionally think of the holiday season as a time of joy and abundance, but for some the pressure to celebrate can be overwhelming. Life situations and loss can heighten feelings of worry and grief. This is a service of light in the midst of darkness.

The service is scheduled for the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. We recognize that there is darkness in all our lives. Through music, silent meditation, scripture, and healing prayer, we reach out to acknowledge sadness with comfort and quiet remembrance, to reflect on the losses we have experienced and to remember together the real reason for the season: The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. God is with us.
    .
Our guest musician will be composer and musician Ana Hernández. Whether you are having a difficult time this holiday season or just want a moment of quiet, please come. If you know someone who is sad, struggling, or alone, please invite them to attend. Everyone is welcome.

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.  Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.

At this Annual Meeting – the first in-person Annual Meeting since the Conference officially came into being – we will do the business of the Conference, enjoy the incarnate presence of each other and reconnect, and witness to the power of what we can do when we come together. There will be a hybrid option for those unable to attend in person.

Together, we bring hope in making disciples of Jesus, making God’s love and justice real, bringing new life as agents of change, and forming covenantal partnerships.

    July 16-20, 2023

    Land, Language, and Liberation

    Montréal, Québec
    McGill University

Land, Language, and Song is this year’s theme, and I’m excited to attend as a student so I can learn from amazing people like Abner Campos, Maria Monteiro, Marcell Silva Steurnagel, Kuzipa Nalwamba, Horacio Vivares, Gerardo Oberman of Red Crearte, Jonathan Maracle, Kenny Wallace, Leslie Jordan, and so many more amazing clinicians in the 30 sectionals. It’s a jam packed singing/worshiping/learning experience and I’ll be taking notes and collecting new songs!

FYI: The Hymn Society is at the forefront in active inclusion of all God’s people in hymnody and the gatherings that support its creation, and in supporting decolonization in hymnody.  They have a robust Scholars Forum, and actively support young hymn writes, and are currently lifting up models for reparations royalties so that the authors of spirituals can be paid for their work or the money can be channeled into organizations doing racial justice and cultural work, instead of the publishers being the only benefactors of the creative output of so many composers.

More FYI: There are six Hymn Societies around the globe, and lots of cross pollination. I’m a member of the Hymn Society of the US and Canada.

    HeartSong Workshop!

Whether you’re in a small church with limited resources, or in a larger place looking for a way to help your community find and/or build its collective voice, learn to play and pray together more deeply, HeartSong is the workshop that will enable you to deepen (or create!) your community of practice through increasing your capacity to stay present in the shared creation of sound and silence (and all the things).  We will listen deeply to the spirit within, share what we notice, reclaim the joy of group learning by rote, utilize repetition, and engage our oft ignored ability to harmonize on the spot. With simple chants and global songs, our time together will be transformative and deeply fun. Sing your way to your sweetest identity, individually and collectively, each person open to sharing more of who they are becoming and confident that the spiritual work they do to become their best selves will be honored and be integrated into the larger community.  There will be singing, drumming, movement, and group improvisation – all of which will leave your community with more tools to invite, encourage, and include absolutely everybody to participate in the growth of the Beloved Community. Teams welcome!

A parish retreat at Trinity Episcopal Church in Haverhill, MA.
I am very excited about this retreat as music is so important to almost everyone, and has been called the glue that holds together many a worship service. Both the Anglo and Latino congregations want to come together in worship, but can’t yet see the possibilities for connecting across language barriers or even intergenerationally. Special prayers for my wife Michelle, Dr. Ramin Malekan, and the amazing healers at Westchester Medical Center. • HeartSong: Building Communities of Practice

    May 24-26, 2024
    CT

Whether you’re in a small church with limited resources, or in a larger place looking for a way to help your community find and/or build its collective voice, learn to play and pray together, say yes to the Spirit, HeartSong is the workshop that will enable you to deepen (or create!) your community of practice through increasing your capacity to stay present in the shared creation of sound and silence.

There will be so much singing!

This is my second Marble Women’s Retreat and I’m grateful to Karla Hendrick and Rev. Elise Brown for the invite. Lovely people!

  • Daring to hope: Staying close to the heart in the current moment

    November 2, 2024
    NY

How can we practice reaching out in small ways to broaden our engagement and deepen our sense of belonging in our communities? During this day of transformation and deep fun, we’ll listen across lines of difference, find/build our collective voice, practice leaving fear and judgement behind, and develop a community of practice through the shared creation of sound and silence.

Using simple chants and songs, we’ll reclaim the joy of group learning by rote, utilize repetition, and engage our oft ignored ability to harmonize on the spot (bring a short song to share if you’ve got one!).

As we become confident that the spiritual work we do to become our sweetest selves can be integrated into the larger community, we’ll uncover better strategies for managing our internal weather and creating more
open spaces so absolutely everybody belongs.

Let’s change ourselves to change the world!
